PermaLink PNG Images08/03/2006 02:00 AM
I have a server that sends out reports in either graph or table format. I was hoping to get these reports in graph format, however, the images are inline PNG files and according to this technote, there are no plans to support them in the Notes client. Does this seem odd? I kind of though PNG files were becoming somewhat of a standard. The reports work great when being sent to Outlook or being read via a browser.

Can PNG files be used in Lotus Notes client. If not, can they be atleast used in the web interface rendered by Domino?

Has this issue been resolved? As I have the same issue and need to get a solution to it since we don't use the web interface to notes we can not view the graphs at all.

Lotus Notes does not support importing of PNG images into Rich Text by default but you can add that feature by adding the following line to your Notes Clients notes.ini file:

EDITIMP18=PNG Image,0,_IW4W,,.PNG,,8,

I was able to reproduce the issue and found several SPRs for that issue.
SPR KSOA4CVSQG states that the Notes Browser does not support PNG files.
SPR MLAT5GSUAK states that a PNG does not display and has been closed as "not a bug".
SPR PBAO65AKFU is an enhancement request asking for future support of the PNG image format. Whenever opening a PMR to ask for PNG support refer to this SPR.

Strange thing is that noone of the SPRs lists customers asking for a fix so their importance is low to lowest.

I received the test-email. I can see the embedded PNG using Domino Web Access but not with Lotus Notes (even the Notes 8 beta fails).
Anoter problem is that even if you have "display inline pictures as attachment" enabled, the picture is not available as attachment.
I also opened PMRs with IBM to increase the weight of the problem.

Christian, I will surely send you an example. I will state that the PNG image will render inline fine via the browser, if one were to use Webmail. It's the inline support for the client that will not get any attention from IBM. This was also confirmed with IBM by the company that is producing these emails using PNGs files. IBM very well could do an about face on this issue. I do find it strange that they won't support it at least with 6.5.x or the 7 code stream.

The technote does not state that PNG is not supported with Lotus Notes, it just says that there are some PNGs not being displayed.
Send one of these emails to me so i can reproduce the issue as I am interrested to look into this.
